Dog Licenses

Category: City Clerk

Licensing your dog is an important public safety requirement. All dogs over six months of age must be licensed annually for the license period of April 1 through March 31. Dog owners may bring or mail a completed Dog License Application, including a copy of your dog's up-to-date rabies certificate and applicable license fee, to the Office of the City Clerk, at City Hall, 500 Broadway, Room 209, Chelsea, MA  02150. Office hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; Tuesday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.; and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Once your dog has been licensed, you will automatically receive a renewal application each year. Dog license fees are as follows:

  • $15 - Spayed or Neutered Dog
  • $20 - Intacted Dog

You can also submit your applications online. VISA/ MASTERCARD/ DISCOVER are accepted.  A service charge of 2.95% or $1.00 minimum will be assessed.

Your dog's rabies tag is not a license; it is given to you by your veterinarian after your dog receives a rabies vaccination. MGL, Chapter 140, Section 145B, requires you to keep both the rabies tag and the license attached to your dog's collar or harness at all times. If your dog is lost, both tags are a source of identification, allowing you to be reunited quickly with your pet.
